TST 101

Overview

This course provides a beginner-level introduction to testing SEL relays.

The student will:

  • Learn basic relay testing skills
  • Acquire skills required to work with SEL relays, such as using Relay Word bits and relay event reports
  • Practice acquired skills by working with a phase and ground distance (SEL-311C) relay during the training

What You Will Learn

At the conclusion of this course, students can:

  • Establish a serial communication link with an SEL relay using HyperTerminal and SEL software
  • Enter settings into an SEL relay
  • Equate Relay Word bits and SELogic® control equations to traditional relay element outputs and discrete contact logic
  • Test, commission, and troubleshoot using metering, sequential events recording, and event reporting features of SEL relays
  • Analyze information recorded by the relay using SEL software
  • Calculate relay test points to verify response
  • Find information in the SEL relay instruction manuals

Course Fee

$650.00 (two-day course). Includes course notebook and certificate of completion.

Classes are conducted from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. Complimentary lunch and breaks are provided.

Prerequisites
Ability to operate a personal computer.
Who Should Participate
Relay technicians or protection engineers and system consultants with an interest in relay testing.
What You Will Need
  • A laptop computer with CD-ROM drive and a working EIA-232 serial port (software installation will be completed during the course; please ensure your computer has no installation blocks enabled)
  • A calculator for calculating test points and expected operating times
