Overview

This course provides a complete study of the classic and current methods of designing protection for industrial power systems.

Course participants will:

Review

  • Electrical fault analysis in industrial power systems
  • Relaying fundamentals applied to industrial systems
  • Basic digital relay concepts
  • Neutral grounding methods
  • Static and dynamic analysis of thermal behavior and damage of electrical equipment

Explore

  • Medium- and large-size induction motor protection (including thermal image relays)
  • Medium-voltage lines and cable overcurrent protection
  • Transformer overcurrent and differential protection
  • Industrial synchronous generator protection
  • Protection coordination

Study and Discuss

  • Main characteristics of modern industrial power protection systems

What You Will Learn

At the conclusion of this course, students can:

  • Describe the protection requirements of industrial medium-voltage power systems
  • Calculate settings for thermal and overcurrent protection for medium-size induction motors
  • Determine the protection schemes and settings for medium-size transformers
  • Apply overcurrent protection and relay coordination concepts to medium-voltage radial lines and cables
  • Implement modern protection systems for industrial generators

Prerequisites
A degree in electrical engineering or equivalent experience is required. In addition, this course requires completion of Power System Protection for Engineers (PROT 401) or the following:
  • Familiarity with motor and generator characteristics
  • A basic knowledge of protective relay design, symmetrical components, and power system protection
  • A working knowledge of trigonometry, basic calculus, complex numbers, and phasor concepts
