Overview

This course provides an opportunity for utility and industrial managers and project managers to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of protective relaying.

Course topics include:

  • Purpose and function of protective relaying
  • General relay characteristics and features
  • Power system protection and redundancy schemes
  • System failure and reliability analysis
  • Monitoring and control principles, including communications basics

What You Will Learn

At the conclusion of this course, students can:
  • Explain power system phenomena, such as power swings, frequency changes, and voltage collapse
  • Describe the importance of protective relaying with regard to safety and asset preservation
  • Explain the benefits of microprocessor-based relays
  • Recognize important protection and control system design features such as zones of protection, thermal ratings and analysis, breaker monitoring, and load profiling
  • List the common ANSI codes associated with protection system engineering
  • Identify the characteristics of Sequential Events Recorder (SER) reports
  • Describe major considerations when integrating and automating power system components
