Overview

SEL offers complete utility protection solutions. This course focuses on distribution protection. Unique solutions to distribution protection philosophies are discussed. Methods that enhance distribution substation protection are explored in detail. The goal is to discuss and understand SEL protection philosophies that maximize the use of SEL relay features. When the full capabilities of the relays are utilized, distribution protection is enhanced and redundancy is maximized without increasing the number of protective relays in a substation.

Course topics include:

  • Distribution overcurrent protection and coordination
  • Bus and transformer protection schemes
  • Breaker failure protection applications
  • Relay failure protection applications
  • Breaker monitoring
  • Substation annunciators

What You Will Learn

Attendees (in groups of two) will gain hands-on experience in communicating, setting, and testing by working with the SEL-351S Relay. Relay event reports will be retrieved and used to understand the proposed protection enhancements.

At the conclusion of this course, students can:

  • Select the correct SEL relay to meet various distribution protection needs
  • Explain the uses and limits of the SEL fast bus protection scheme and other common bus protection practices
  • Coordinate and apply negative-sequence overcurrent protection with confidence
  • Implement breaker failure protection into your relay schemes with no additional relays
  • Apply methods learned in class to provide backup and redundant protection for every relay in the substation without adding additional relays
  • Implement annunciator and transformer alarm monitoring into transformer protection relays
  • Apply methods learned in class to troubleshoot and commission new substation protection schemes
  • Analyze Sequential Events Recorder (SER) and relay event reports
